Cooking Matters to Celebrate Food Day with Store Tours at Hannaford Supermarkets

Senator Angus King to Participate

To celebrate Food Day, Good Shepherd Food Bank, Cooking Matters and Hannaford Supermarkets will bring together dieticians and nutrition education coordinators to show people how they can eat healthy on a tight budget. Activities will occur at 29 Hannaford and independent grocery stores across Maine, with a special event in Portland. U.S. Sen. Angus King will be among those participating.

Nutrition educators from Cooking Matters, a program of Good Shepherd Food Bank and Share Our Strength, will show people how they can make healthy meals on a tight budget, with the choices they make in different sections of the store. Participants also will take part in the “$10 Challenge.”  Each individual will receive a gift card and a challenge — stretch that $10 to create a day’s worth of healthy family meals, using the information they received.

At the Forest Avenue Hannaford in Portland, dietitians also will be positioned at education stations throughout the store to support Cooking Matters at the Store lessons.  Interactive, informational activities and food sampling will be taking place.
