June 25, 2013 (Auburn, Maine) – In Maine, 1 in every 4 children are food insecure and there has been a 50% increase in the number of Mainers facing hunger within the past nine years. On Tuesday, June 25 local Dunkin’ Donuts business owners will help to combat this issue by pledging $5,000 to start the first school pantry at Edward Little High School in Auburn. The School Pantry Program is a child hunger initiative that helps to ensure that low-income families have a readily accessible source of healthy and nutritious food to prepare at home.
To announce the new school pantry, the Dunkin’ Donuts CommUNITY Crew will hold a “pre-launch” and check presentation event at Good Shepherd Food Bank in Auburn. In attendance will be members of Good Shepherd, Edward Little High School Assistant Principal Steve Galway, and local Auburn Dunkin’ Donuts representative, Bob Seavey. The school pantry will officially open at the start of the school year.
“We are so appreciative of the local Dunkin’ Donuts business owners for their pledge and for allowing the school pantry at Edward Little to come to fruition,” said Kristen Miale, President of Good Shepherd Food Bank. “In our continuous journey to end hunger in Maine, it is a great boost for morale to team up with business owners right in our community.”
For 32 years, Good Shepherd Food Bank has worked diligently to establish essential partnerships with many others concerned about ending needless hunger here in Maine. Good Shepherd is just one example of the dedication local Dunkin’ Donuts owners have to give back to their communities.
