Good Shepherd Food Bank Will Provide Free Meals to Bangor & Brewer Youth at Five Sites Throughout Summer

BANGOR, ME — Good Shepherd Food Bank is sponsoring five Summer Lunch sites where Bangor and Brewer children can receive free nutritious meals this summer, when the school lunches they depend on through the school year are unavailable.

Through partnerships with the Bangor Housing Authority, Bangor Public Library, Bangor School Department, and the Brewer Housing Authority, meals will be offered at the Bangor Community Center in Capehart, the Griffin Park Community Center, the Bangor Pubic Library, Fairmount School, and Rinfret Drive in Brewer. Sites began operation June 15 and will be open daily Monday through Friday until August 28.

In Maine, more than 80,000 children depend upon the National School Lunch program for the nutrition they need to make it through the day. Despite the availability of funding for meals from the USDA, only 17 percent of those students receive meals during the long summer break due to a lack of accessible sites and lack of awareness about the program.
