Maine Hunger-relief Agencies Receive $350,000 in Grants from Good Shepherd Food Bank

Capacity Building Grants awarded to partner agencies to make improvements

Good Shepherd Food Bank is pleased to announce the recipients of their first community-led Capacity Building Grant Awards. The purpose of the grant program is to support the Food Bank’s partner network in increasing food access in local communities through organizational and financial stability, program quality, and growth.

“A food program’s capacity for greater service to its clients and the wider community is not limited to access to food. The Capacity Building Grants allows our partner agencies to ‘dream a little,’ to think about what is needed to help them feed more people nutritious food efficiently,” stated Shannon Coffin, vice president of Community Partnerships at Good Shepherd Food Bank. “Pantries can use the funds for reach-in coolers, walk-in refrigerators, shelving, increasing access times, food safety, technology, transportation, or any other project they know will improve their effectiveness.”

While this is not the first year for the grant program, it is the first time the program used a community-led selection model.

“A long-term goal of the Capacity Building Grants program is to transfer decision-making power to the grantees using our community-led grant-making model,” Kristen Miale, president of Good Shepherd Food Bank added. “We are grateful to members of our Network Advisory Council and our Community Partnerships Board Committee for their engagement throughout the process and for their valuable input and expertise in the decision-making process.”

This round of grants represents the largest financial investment in agency capacity ever done through a single grant opportunity.
