CSFP: Nutritious Food for Maine Seniors

The Commodity Supplemental Food Program (CSFP), also known as Senior Food Boxes, helps older Mainers eat well and stay healthy by providing monthly packages of nutritious USDA foods.

What is CSFP?

The Commodity Supplemental Food Program provides monthly food packages to eligible adults age 60 and older. The food boxes contain a variety of nutritious shelf-stable foods designed to supplement diets and support healthy aging.

A Brief History

CSFP was established by Congress in 1969 to improve nutrition among vulnerable populations. While the program initially served multiple groups, it now focuses exclusively on supporting older adults with nutritious USDA foods.

Today, it remains an important resource for seniors living on fixed incomes.

Who CSFP Helps in Maine

  • Adults age 60 and older who meet income guidelines
  • Seniors on fixed incomes, especially in rural communities
  • Older Mainers choosing between food, housing, and healthcare costs
  • Seniors who could use a little extra support to eat well

Why CSFP Matters

  • Improve nutrition
  • Stretch limited household budgets
  • Support healthy aging
  • Reduce food insecurity among older adults
  • Connect seniors with local community resources

Our Role

Working with community partners throughout Maine, we distribute Senior Food Boxes to eligible older adults, helping ensure consistent access to nutritious food.
